A Historical Gem in the Heart of Dhaka
Lalbagh Fort, located in the historic Old Dhaka, is a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in the rich cultural and historical heritage of Bangladesh. Here’s what you need to know when planning your visit with Milfa Travel:
History and Significance
Commissioned by Prince Muhammad Azam in 1677, Lalbagh Fort was intended to be a grand Mughal residence but was left unfinished due to the prince’s departure to Delhi and the subsequent death of Shaista Khan’s daughter, Pari Bibi, in 1684. This tragic event led Shaista Khan to believe the fort was cursed, halting its construction indefinitely
Key Attractions
- Mausoleum of Pari Bibi: A beautifully crafted white marble room housing the tomb of Pari Bibi, although access to this room is restricted.
- Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Audience): A two-story building that served as the residence of the Mughal governor and now houses a museum featuring Mughal artifacts such as coins, paintings, carpets, and weapons.
- Quilla Mosque: A small but elegant mosque with three domes, still used by locals and separated from the rest of the fort by a fence.
- Underground Tunnels: An intricate network of tunnels, some of which were designed as mazes to confuse intruders. These tunnels are now sealed due to safety concerns
